Thank you for participating in the 409 Bible Adventure Challenge with your school and/or your child. This reading challenge promises to be an exciting and memorable activity that both you and your child will cherish for years to come. This challenge was developed by a school chaplain to inspire students with character-building stories from the Bible, imparting essential values like courage, honesty, and trust.
Note to students
Please find someone at home to read these stories to you. Reading aloud not only makes your voice captivating but also helps you practice public speaking. It is important that you have your family “sign off” the passport as you complete each section.
Note to families
Your child’s reading confidence and comprehension will flourish when you ask them questions about what they have read. This also adds to the joy of reading together. You might want to read some parts aloud to demonstrate how to read with expression and explain the meaning of any new words. For the best experience, we recommend starting with a prayer together before reading each night.
Questions for young readers
With your child or family, start from the beginning and read one story at a time. Here’s a suggested approach:
- Have your child read the story out loud once.
- Ask them to summarize the story in a few sentences.
- Discuss the story using the following six questions:
- Who is your favourite character and why?
- What is new?
- What surprises you?
- What don’t you understand?
- What will you obey or apply?
- What will you share with someone this week?
You may need to model what this looks like the first time, but your child will soon develop a love for reading the stories and sharing what they have learned.
Reading tips
Research indicates that children who develop a love for reading tend to excel in school. Make it a special quality time by sitting together before bedtime and listening to them read. Encourage them to read aloud and, when they are comfortable, to put expression into their voices.
